10 Tips for Caring for the Environment During Your Vacation
If you're reading this post, you probably care about the health of the planet as much as we do. Respect for our environment should accompany us at all times, wherever we go and whatever we do. For example, if you recycle at home, why not continue doing it during your vacation? Maintaining these good habits during moments of disconnection, relaxation, and fun is essential because climate change doesn’t take a vacation and continues unabated. To help you in your efforts, we’ve put together this list of 10 ideas to continue caring for the environment even while on vacation. Interested? In this post, we’ll give you some simple tips to minimize your impact on your next getaway.
How to Care for the Environment During Your Vacation
All the tips we provide here are applicable at any time of year, regardless of the location you choose for your vacation. So, there are no excuses for putting aside your commitment to the environment when you're not at home. And if you haven't adopted these habits yet, perhaps this is a good time to take small actions that help curb the advance of climate change.
1. Don’t Leave Waste When You Go to the Beach or Mountains.
Obvious, but it’s worth reminding. When you spend a day at the beach, mountains, or any other natural setting, keep in mind that you won’t find trash cans there. At least not every few meters like in cities. So, what should you do with the possible waste you will generate? Throw it on the ground or hide it? No, of course not. Burying those scraps in the sand or soil, thinking they’re biodegradable, is a mistake. It’s a deeply ingrained habit that ultimately just results in polluting the environment. Sooner or later, they will end up in the sea or be found by animals and scattered around the area. How to solve it? Very easily. Always carry a bag or container with you where you can deposit all the waste produced until you reach a container or get home. This is also valid for any place you go where there are no trash cans or containers nearby.
2. Be Careful with Fire!
Every summer, you’re probably shocked by the number of wildfires in Spain. Did you know that many are caused by human negligence? If you plan to spend the day in the mountains and want to make a fire to cook or warm up, you must first confirm that it is allowed in that area. Many places have restrictions on the use of fire to prevent wildfires. For example, in Mallorca, it is prohibited to use cooking stoves in recreational areas during the months with a higher risk of fire (from May to October, typically). And if you decide to make a fire because it’s permitted, keep it supervised at all times. Remember, any lapse in attention can trigger a wildfire with devastating effects. Besides the lives at risk, both human and wildlife in that area. Another significant cause of fires is improperly extinguished cigarette butts. So, try to avoid smoking in the woods or mountains. If you do, always do it in permitted areas and, of course, don’t throw cigarette butts or ashes on the ground. Make sure you have an appropriate container nearby to dispose of this type of waste safely. Furthermore, it goes without saying that if you smoke on the beach, don’t leave the butts buried in the sand…
3. Reduce Car Use.
Whenever possible, try not to access natural areas by car, even if it’s allowed. Noise and emissions are very harmful to wildlife and plants. For example, if you plan to eat in a natural setting, try to park your car on the road or at the entrance of the natural park instead of attempting to get as close as possible to walk less. Take the opportunity to walk or ride a bike: not only will you pollute less, but it’s also much healthier for your body. There are more and more natural trails prepared for walking or biking… Take advantage of them!
4. Leave Everything in Its Place.
When you visit a natural park, especially if it’s a place with a landscape very different from what you’re used to, it’s normal to see animals and plants that seem exotic to you. That doesn’t mean you can touch them or even take “something as a souvenir.” No matter how much you like a plant or find an animal that catches your eye, don’t take them. Remember, any gesture, no matter how innocent, can disrupt the normal order of the ecosystem. For example, it may affect an animal's burrow or the plants it feeds on. Another widespread and harmful trend is to make stone piles. By participating in that, you’re not only altering the landscape, but you’re also eliminating the habitat of many insects and plants that found refuge among those stones. Enjoy the landscape and take only the fresh air filling your lungs… Please don’t touch the rest.
5. Control Water Use.
As we mentioned at the beginning, caring for the environment during your vacation is simply about maintaining your usual habits even while traveling. Among them, making responsible use of water. Don’t know how to do it while on vacation? Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or washing your hands, and opt for a quick shower instead of a bath. Just these two simple actions will save more water than you imagine. Following these guidelines, among others, is always important, but even more so when you’re visiting a region with drought issues. Water is life. Don’t waste it.
6. Save Energy.
If you do it at home to save on your electricity bill, do it on vacation to avoid wasting energy. The higher the electricity consumption, the greater the production in power plants and the more pollution generated. Unfortunately, the percentage of “clean energy” is still very low. So, turn off unnecessary lights and devices you’re not using.
7. Opt for Eco-Friendly Products.
Another thing you can do to care for the environment during your vacation is to buy eco-friendly products. For example, when planning to go camping or taking a road trip, look for hygiene or cleaning products that are environmentally friendly. They’re good for the planet and for you since they have much lower toxicity levels.
8. Eliminate Plastic from Your Luggage.
Yes, we know it’s difficult to eliminate plastic completely because it’s everywhere. But there are some ways to at least reduce it. Here’s an idea: when organizing a picnic, use biodegradable or natural material utensils (cups, plates, cutlery, etc.). Another way to reduce the plastic you pack is to buy bamboo toothbrushes and wooden combs.
9. Reuse Everything You Can.
The biggest example of this is bags. If you’re given a plastic bag when you buy something, don’t throw it away; keep it to store things in throughout your trip. When you no longer need it, throw it filled with containers into the yellow recycling bin. Another suggestion, instead of buying individual plastic bottles every day, buy larger bottles and refill your reusable bottle before leaving your accommodation. Don’t have one? It’s a highly recommended option. Not only will you be reducing waste, but you’ll also be saving money.
10. Avoid Overusing Fans and Air Conditioning.
If you travel to a hot destination, surely one of the first things you do upon arriving at your accommodation will be to turn on the fan or air conditioning. Normal. But before doing so, ask yourself if it’s necessary. Is it really that hot, or would opening the windows be enough? Especially when the sun has already set. And, above all, turn them off when you leave. There’s no point in leaving them on all day for no reason. Don’t worry; once you arrive, cooling the room will only take a few minutes. Remember what we mentioned about saving energy…
Caring for the Environment During Vacations Is Easier Than You Think.
As you can see, caring for the environment when you travel is quite simple. It’s just a matter of applying a little common sense and maintaining the habits you already have. This way, you’ll be contributing to reducing pollution and keeping the places you’re enjoying during your vacation clean. Do your part, encourage those around you to do the same, and together we can gradually make this planet a better place.
